Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla reveal more information about their New Zealand tour

There’s a good chance Prince Charles will receive lots of birthday gifts while in New Zealand, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands this fall, since his tour of the Pacific countries takes place just a few days after he turns 71 on Nov. 14.

On Oct. 10, Clarence House confirmed the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall will visit New Zealand from Nov. 17 to 23. They’ll begin with touring Auckland, where they’ll learn about programs supporting youth along with environmental issues, while Camilla will focus on issues connected with tackling domestic violence and literacy. Those are two causes close to her heart. The couple will also meet with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in Auckland.

From there, the royal couple will journey to Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where they will meet with Māori people. The visit will mark Charles’s first trip to the Treaty Grounds since 1994. They will also visit Christchurch, the site of two mosque attacks in March and a deadly earthquake in 2011. Their trip to the city will mark the second time the royals have visited this year – Prince Williamtravelled there at the New Zealand government’s request in April.

In addition to Christchurch, the couple will visit Kaikōura, where they will learn about how another earthquake in 2016 profoundly affected the community.

On Nov. 23, the Duchess will return to the UK, at which point Charles will fly to Tuvalu, where he will focus most of his visit on issues related to the environment and climate change. The Duke has not visited Tuvalu since 1970. His trip to the Solomon Islands, which he will also make solo, will be spent dealing with those issues as well. It will be his first time visiting the archipelago.

This will be Charles and Camilla’s third royal tour of New Zealand. The couple first visited together in 2012 to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Their last time in the country was November 2015.
