On a trip to a glacier to see the effects of climate change, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were given a traditional Chitrali feather cap. They were also presented with two cloaks – one of those, given to Kate, featured gorgeous elaborate embroidering. The two beamed as they looked at each other wearing the clothing, and they were even more touched when they discovered the hat has a special connection to Princess Diana!
The couple were shown a book of pictures from the late Princess of Wales’ trip to the country in 1991, in which she visited Chitral. One of the photos featured William’s mother in the same type of feathered cap! She was also wearing an embroidered cloak similar to the one Kate was given.
“Hahaha! The same hat!” William said, laughing.
“Very special,” Kate said.
In addition to the Kalash hat and cloak, Kate opted for an entirely brown ensemble for her trip to the Chiatibo glacier and the Kalash village of Bumburet. She wore a brown midi skirt, brown leather waistcoat, brown dress shirt, suede Really Wild boots and drop earrings by Missoma.
Diana visited the country three times during her life. In addition to the 1991 trip, she travelled there in 1996 and 1997. The 1996 trip was to visit the family of Hasnat Khan in Lahore. Diana was then in a relationship with the British-Pakistani heart and lung surgeon, but that ended in June 1997. Hasnat later attended Diana’s funeral that same year.
William and Kate are in Pakistan until Oct. 18. The couple arrived in the country on Oct. 14 and spent the next day visiting with children at a school in Islamabad, and then travelled to a national park in the nearby Margalla hills to learn about conservation efforts in the area.
From there, they met privately with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan – a friend of Diana's – and President Arif Alvi before heading to a reception hosted by the British High Commissioner at the Pakistan National Memorial. They arrived by tuk-tuk, with William dressed in a teal traditional sherwani and Kate sporting a gorgeous sparkling emerald green gown by Jenny Packham.
