‘My mother would be so proud of you’: Prince William honours young people in memory of Princess Diana

By Zach Harper

Princess Diana would be very proud of Prince William, but on Nov. 26, he wanted to let 20 young people know the work they’re doing is important and that his mother would also be very impressed with them.

The Duke of Cambridge hosts a reception at Kensington Palace for this year’s Legacy Awards, which are handed out by The Diana Award, a charity honouring his late mother. This year’s winners – one of whom is Canadian – were all recognized for their contributions to changing society and the world at large. William made sure he spent time with each of them at the event and even showed off his impressive language skills, Diana Awards chief executive Tessy Ojo told People.

“He… had read up on their stories,” she said. “One of the young people is from Tanzania, and he started talking to him in Swahili – and this young boy was gobsmacked! It wasn’t just one sentence. This was not something he had just read out of a book. It was truly special.”

The prince’s uncle, Earl Charles Spencer, presented awards to the 20 youngsters at the Painted Hall at the Royal Naval College in London after the reception, and William was said to be very touched by each of the people he met.

“He asked me, ‘How did you find these young people? These are truly world changers,’” Tessy told People. “And the other thing he said to the group was, ‘My mother would be so proud of you.’”

Of course, Diana was known for her charity work and her contribution to causes including the elimination of landmines worldwide, the rights of children and youth, erasing the stigma around HIV/AIDS and much more. It’s fantastic for all of us to continue seeing how her sons have continued her legacy after her tragic death 22 years ago. Her loss has been very hard on her sons, but she would be thrilled to see the strong, kind, caring men (and dads!) they have become.
