Olivia Colman recently shared a very awkward encounter she had with Prince William, when she asked him if he had watched The Crown and his answer was a big nope. But she’s not the only star of the show to have had a funny run-in with the Duke of Cambridge.
Helena Bonham Carter shared her own amusing exchange with William when she appeared on Watch What Happens Live on Nov. 26. The star, who plays Princess Margaret in seasons 3 and 4 of the hit Netflix series, said the moment came after the birth of her daughter Nell Burton, who is now 11, and she and William had both been drinking at the time when she approached him at a party and asked him about taking on a big responsibility.
“I wasn’t that drunk, but enough drunk for me not to drink anymore. He wasn’t totally sober himself. Not in a bad way, it was just very jolly,” she laughed.
Helena got very enthusiastic about giving her first child Billy, who she shares with ex-husband Tim Burton, lots of godparents. So many, in fact, that he ended up with a whopping 11 godparents, meaning she’d “spent all [her] friends” when Nell was born, and had no idea who to ask about taking on the responsibility.
“I thought, ‘Well, if I give her Prince William that would cover,’ you know?” she deadpanned.
“He just said, ‘You don’t want me to be godfather for your child.’ And I left. I mean, obviously, it didn’t work out.”
Earlier this month, Olivia spoke about her own meeting with the Duke of Cambridge when she appeared on TheGraham Norton Show, saying it “didn’t go very well” and happened while the two were attending a dinner.
“He asked what I was doing at the moment before he quickly added, ‘Actually, I know what you’re doing.’ I was so excited and asked, ‘Have you watched it?’ His answer was a firm, ‘No.’”
You can see Helena playing William’s late great-aunt and Olivia playing his grandmother on Season 3 of The Crown, which is on Netflix now.
