Prince William and Duchess Kate are caught ‘cheating’ in Christmas baking competition with Mary Berry

By Heather Cichowski

Caught sticky-handed! Literally! Prince William and Duchess Kate engaged in some friendly baking competition during the A Berry Royal Christmas TV special with Mary Berry, and the Cambridges revealed they can be quite fierce when it comes to winning.

In the special, which aired on Dec. 16 in the UK, William, Kate, Mary and former Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain prepared a meal to thank employees working in charities during the holiday season. The preparations led to a competition between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to see who could produce the best Christmas meringue roulade.

Mary counted down to the challenge. When she said, "On your marks, get set, go" William and Kate got to work, with William being instructed by Nadiya and Kate listening to Mary’s directions.

There were plenty of laughs and healthy banter. For example, when William was concentrating on scoring his roulade with Nadiya, Mary and Kate asked if he was doing alright.

"Could you keep your eyes on your own roulade please," joked William.

When it came to the "tricky bit" of rolling the roulade, Nadiya initially said she wasn’t going to help William. However, he whispered, "she’s not watching, she’s not watching" so the baking pro leant some assistance. But Mary caught them in the act!

William tried to defend himself by explaining, "she’s guiding me."

Kate rolled up her roulade herself as Mary inspected what the competition was up to. But the mother of three was called out for dusting her delectable dessert with icing sugar after Nadiya and William said time was up. Mary countered there was no time limit.

In the end, Mary was very diplomatic and didn't name a winner after inspecting the Christmas roulades.

"It is very difficult. I have to say it’s a draw," the kind baking legend said. "I’m not quarrelling with either of you."

The Kensington Royal social media channels have shared the clip and royal fans love seeing the couple playfully interacting.

"This is DELIGHTFUL!!!!!" one Instagram commenter exclaimed. "Love Catherine and William!"

"I didn’t know it was possible but after watching this show, I love the Cambridges even more now," another person tweeted.

A Berry Royal Christmas has provided numerous interesting tidbits about the Royal Family.

During the meringue roulade competition, Duchess Kate reveals to Mary that opening presents on Christmas Eve is one of the Royal Family’s Christmas traditions.

In another segment of the program, Kate tells Mary one of Prince Louis’s first words was partly due to the Queen of Cakes herself!
