Prince William gave a touching speech in which he spoke about how he proposed to Duchess Kate on a getaway in Kenya nearly a decade ago.

On Jan. 20, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted a reception for the UK-Africa Investment Summit at Buckingham Palace. In it, he recounted his fond memories of the East African country and discussed how important it is to them both!

In the Music Room at the Palace, the Duke of Cambridge began his speech by saying, "the African continent holds a very special place in [his] heart."

"It is the place my father took my brother and me shortly after our mother died," he noted, speaking of his late mother, Princess Diana.

"And when deciding where best to propose to Catherine I could think of no more fitting place than Kenya to get down on one knee," he continued.

William and Kate announced their engagement in November 2010, after the duke proposed earlier in the year on the fateful trip to Kenya. He popped the question with the now-iconic blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring, the very same one Prince Charles gifted to Diana in 1981.

During the couple's engagement interview, William touchingly reflected on the ring's significance.

"It's very special, as Kate is very special," he stated. "It's my way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on today and the excitement."

As royals fans will remember, the lovebirds were married in the royal wedding of the decade on April 29, 2011.

At the UK-Africa Summit, William also told African heads of states and ministers in attendance about how he and Kate hope to visit more of the continent together.

"Throughout my life, I have been lucky enough to spend time in many other parts of Africa. I'm also honoured to be the Patron of the Royal African Society." he said. "And as Catherine and I have said to several of you here tonight, we hope to have the chance to visit many more countries in the future and share our mutual love of your continent with our children."
