Duchess Meghan pays subtle tribute to Canada with her jewels at Commonwealth Day service

By Heather Cichowski

Duchess Meghan captivated royals fans when she stepped out in head-to-toe green at Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in London on March 9 with Prince Harry.

It was an important day, since it was Duke and Duchess of Sussex's final official joint outing before they step down from their senior royal roles on March 31. Meghan no doubt created a lasting impression with her emerald green ensemble, and she also used the opportunity to pay a subtle tribute to Canada with her earrings from Canadian brand Birks.

The former Suits actress was clad in a long-sleeved dress with asymmetrical cape-like neckline by Emilia Wickstead. She accessorized with a coordinating green fascinator with netted veil by William Chambers and her favourite beige Aquazzura heels. The aforementioned Birks earrings, believed to be the Snowflake Snowstorm Diamond Earrings, completed her vivid look.

Meghan's raven mane was styled straight and slicked back into a sleek low bun to complement her dramatic hat and to highlight the sparkle of the earrings. Even beneath the netted bow, the jewels were still clearly visible.

The diamond earrings are "inspired by the icy beauty of Canadian winters," according to the Birks website. The dazzling studs feature 2.15ct of diamonds and sell for $12,000.

Meghan is very familiar with the splendour of Canadian winters, given that she filmed Suits in Toronto for a few years. Additionally, she, Harry and Archie have been spending a significant amount of time in Canada since they went on their extended break from royal duties last year.

They are residing in North Saanich, B.C. The Vancouver Island town, located just north of the provincial capital of Victoria, might not have as harsh, icy winters compared to other parts of the country, but the earrings are a lovely nod to the landscape of their adopted home of Canada and to the Commonwealth.

In January, the Queen agreed to a period of transition for the Sussexes in which they would divide their time between here and the UK. Since the announcement, the pair have kept a relatively low profile in Canada. They recently returned to the UK to carry out their final few engagements.

The Birks snowflake earrings are a particular favourite for Meghan. The former actress has previously worn the sparklers to multiple engagements, including to an Oceania exhibit in 2018 and on her tour of Ireland with Harry that same year, when they met with the Irish President Michael D. Higgins, and his wife, Sabina Higgins.
