The Crown is officially coming back for a sixth season!
The show's creator, Peter Morgan, had originally intended the Netflix series to have six seasons. But when work started on season five, he made the decision to wrap the show at the end of that season.
"At the outset, I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons, but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five, it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop," he told The Hollywood Reporter in January.
To the delight of The Crown fans, he has reconsidered this and the show will now get a sixth season to enable a deeper look into the Royal Family on the small screen.
"News from the palace: we can confirm there will be a sixth (and final) season of @TheCrownNetflix, in addition to the previously announced five!" Netflix wrote on July 9 as it revealed the news on Twitter.
“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons," Peter explained about the change.
"To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”
"I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret," the British actress said in a statement. "The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don't want to let the side down."
It remains to be seen who the remainder of the cast members will be for the sixth season, but season four will see Tobias Menzies playing Prince Philip again, along with Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles and Emerald Fennell portraying Camilla Parker Bowles.
Filming for season four of The Crownwas finishedbefore the spread of COVID-19 suspended production across television and film and social distancing was put in place. It is anticipated the fourth season will launch later this year.
