Duchess Kate visits baby charity to highlight its work on lowering pregnancy loss rates

Duchess Kate stepped out to Imperial College London to highlight Baby Loss Awareness Week and hear about the work Tommy's, a pregnancy loss charity, is doing to lower miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth rates across the United Kingdom.
The mom of three also met children who were born thanks to care at Tommy's research clinics across the country, and heard about how charity Sands is supporting bereaved parents.

Kate met Obiele and Nii-Addy Laryea, two parents who lost two babies. Tommy's helped them by performing a cervical stitch operation and they successfully delivered their child, Tetteh-Kwei, who is now two years old, thanks to help from Tommy's. The procedure ensured he stayed in his mother's uterus until he was old enough to be delivered.

Researchers estimate one in four women have a miscarriage during their lifetime, and the causes of those miscarriages are usually unexplained. Tommy's is committed to "finding the root causes of miscarriage" so they can be prevented, according to Professor Phillip Bennett, the director of the Institute and Tommy's National Centre for Miscarriage Research.

Kate received a Tommy's candle from Plum & Ashby while there. Tommy's is holding a global Wave of Light event to end Baby Loss Awareness Week on Oct. 15. People are being encouraged to light candles around the world to remember babies that have been lost through miscarriage, stillbirth and other forms of pregnancy loss, and use the hashtag #WaveOfLight when sharing on social media.
