Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex to attend Swedish royal wedding

Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex will make up the royal guest list when they attend the wedding of Prince Carl Philip of Sweden and Sofia Hellqvist next month. The lavish nuptials will take place on Saturday 13 June.

A roll call of European nobles will flock to Stockholm for the highly anticipated royal celebration of the year, and as People reports, Edward and Sophie are confirmed attendees.

This comes as no surprise as the Queen's youngest son and his wife regularly represent the British royal family at events overseas.

Edward, 51, and Sophie, 50, were invited to the weddings of Carl Philip's siblings – that of his older sister Crown Princess Victoria in 2010 when the future queen married Daniel Westling; and that of his younger sister Princess Madeleine in 2013 when she wed Chris O'Neill.

Apart from Edward and Sophie, other European royals who are set to attend the upcoming Swedish wedding are Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. They will be joined by Frederik's 75-year-old mother, the reigning Queen Margrethe.

The links between the Swedish and Danish royal families are very close. Princess Mary is godmother to Carl Philip's niece, Princess Estelle, and was present at her christening in Sweden three years ago.

Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are also rumoured to be attending Carl Philip and Sofia's wedding, much like they did at Princess Victoria's nuptials.

Sophie Wessex, at Trooping the Colour in 2014, will miss this year's event for the wedding

As Edward and Sophie will be in Stockholm for the weekend of wedding celebrations, the couple will miss one important occasion back home, Trooping the Colour.

The annual event honours the Queen's birthday, and while Her Majesty officially turned 89 in April, she traditionally celebrates with a second event in June when the weather is more dependable.

It is not yet known which British royals will attend the event at Horse Guards Parade in central London, but Prince William and Kate may make an appearance as they have done each year since they married in 2011.

The parents may take a break from caring for their two children under two, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and travel from their country home of Anmer Hall in Norfolk for the high-profile event. If Kate does attend, this will be her first official engagement since welcoming her daughter Charlotte four weeks ago.
