Prince William, his brother Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton stepped out in unison to attend the Rugby World Cup on Saturday evening – but the family were split as to who they were supporting.

William and Kate, who recently returned to the spotlight following maternity leave, joined forces to cheer on Wales, while Harry showed his loyalty to the host nation England.

It seems the Duke and Duchess' efforts didn't go to waste, as Wales managed to clinch a 28-25 victory over England in the final minutes of the game.

Unable to contain his excitement, William, who sported a red zip-up Wales jacket for the match at Twickenham, West London, embraced his wife and clapped loudly as the final whistle was blown. A slightly dejected Harry, in his England rugby top, was pictured sporting a less than jubilant expression.

While Kate was seated amongst thousands of fans in the stadium, the 33-year-old Duchess caused excitement from her fellow spectators and royal watchers at home.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte's mum looked radiant in Reiss tapered trousers that featured a black and white pattern, and a dark blazer. She brightened up her look with a red scarf and gold dangly earrings.

William, Kate and Harry attended the opening ceremony of the tournament last week, where Harry gave a speech in his capacity as honorary president of England Rugby 2015, the organising committee staging the contest.

The rugby-mad Prince, who is vice patron of the Rugby Football Union, told the supporters, and millions watching at home: "This evening marks the beginning of a celebration of rugby which I hope will inspire current players, those new to the game and future generations."

Before the nail-biting England Wales match, William, who is vice royal patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, had told the Dragons: "Unfortunately, I will be watching you with my brother, so I will need a Wales win more than ever!"

This month marks a return to royal duties for Kate, who has been on maternity leave since welcoming her daughter Charlotte in May.

Earlier this week the Duchess championed a cause close to her heart at the Anna Freud Centre, which promotes mental health in children, followed by a visit behind bars to a women's prison in Surrey.
