Back in March – in the same week that he announced he would be leaving the Army – Prince Harry launched the Walking With The Wounded 1,000-mile walk around Britain, and vowed that he would show his support by joining the team at some point on their journey. On Wednesday, the Prince honoured his promise and met up with the six wounded service personnel, including two from the US, who have undertaken the challenge.

The bearded Prince, 31, laughed and joked with the group as they set off from Church Stretton, near Shrewsbury. The team are around the half way point of their challenge; by the end of day 39 on 29 September, they had covered 541 miles with 458 miles to go.Harry has been a prolific supporter of the Walking With The Wounded since the charity was founded in 2010, and he hasn't been afraid to get stuck in, taking part in their treks to the North Pole in 2011 and the South Pole in 2013.

The prince is good friends with Simon Daglish, co-founder of the military charity – and it was at Simon's invitation that Harry paid a surprise visit to the Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Dover on Monday (Simon himself attended the school and has a son there).Speaking after the royal's "inspirational" visit, the school's Executive Principle Chris Russell said: "Prince Harry’s visit meant a great deal to students as his military career is an inspiration. Many of our students have parents serving overseas, and in conflicts previously experienced by Prince Harry himself. This occasion will be something students will treasure all of their lives."
