As the nation prepares to honour the Queen's 90th birthday, David Cameron has announced that pubs across London will be able to stay open later in order to celebrate Her Majesty's milestone.

The Queen's birthday falls on 21 April and with plenty of celebrations in store, from pageants to street parties, the Prime Minister's latest announcement adds to the special events for the big day.

Pubs that are normally licensed to trade until 11 in the evening will be able to stay open an extra two hours on 10 and 11 June.

David Cameron announced pubs will stay open later to celebrate the Queen's birthday

"We will be extending pub opening hours on the 10th and 11th of June to mark Her Majesty the Queen's 90th birthday," David Cameron told MPs during Prime Minister's Questions.

Downing Street have revealed that the government will consult with licensing authorities, industry and community groups about the proposed news next week.

Pub opening hours were extended for the Royal Wedding in 2011 and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, generating £20 million, according to the British Beer and Pub Association.

Her Majesty's birthday will be celebrated with many events

As well as London's pubs extending their opening hours, the British Monarch's birthday celebrations include The Patron's Lunch, which as been billed as the "biggest street party" the nation has ever seen.

A total of 10,000 people will sit down for a picnic-style lunch on Sunday 12 June at tables positioned along the full length of the Mall. The Queen will naturally attend, as well as Prince Phillip and other members of the royal family.

However, with only 2,000 tickets available to the public, most of the nation may be enjoying the special day from the comfort of their own home.

Members of the royal family will feature in a one-off television special

ITV have announced that the Queen's 90th birthday will be celebrated with a landmark two-hour programme on her life and reign, in which the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will all make a very special contribution.

The film, set to be shown this spring, features interviews from key figures in the monarch's life – including members of the royal family.

The public are also encouraged to mark the day with their own street parties across the country. The government has released new guidelines giving practical advice on how to plan your own neighbourhood bash – including the rules and regulations to follow.
