Prince William and Kate to make debut at Chelsea Flower Show

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are to make their first appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show. They will join regular visitors the Queen and Prince Harry on Monday 23 May at the horticultural event.

William and Kate will have time to tour the different exhibits, but the highlight of their visit will most likely be viewing a new flower that has been named after their daughter Princess Charlotte.

The Princess Charlotte chrysanthemum, which is pink with green tips, is being entered for Flower of the Year.

It has been produced by Dutch company Deliflor, the world's largest chrysanthemum breeder, which previously delivered a bouquet of flowers to William and Kate following the birth of their daughter last year.

The flower is currently on sale at Waitrose branches for £8, with 50p being donated to East Anglia's Children's Hospices, a charity that Kate is patron of.

William and Kate have surprisingly never visited the Chelsea Flower Show in their royal capacities. The Queen is patron of the event, which is running from 24 to 28 May this year.

Prince Harry is also a regular fixture at the event. The fifth-in-line has previously visited to show his support for his charity Sentebale, which supports children suffering with HIV/AIDS in Lesotho.

Last year Harry visited the show to view a garden designed by Matt Keightley, who created an African-themed space for Harry's charity. As requested by the Prince, the garden featured plants that are both native to the UK and Lesotho.

Other members of the royal family who are expected to attend this year include the Queen's son Prince Andrew and his daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, as well as the Queen's daughter Princess Anne.

Prince Edward's wife the Countess of Wessex is also due to attend.
