Cindy Crawford opens up about the first time she met Princess Diana

<a href=/tags/0/queen-maxima><strong>Queen Máxima</strong></a> of the Netherlands visited Zuidbaak floriculture company in Honselersdijk on March 27 to hear about the impact of the <a href=/tags/0/coronavirus><strong>coronavirus</strong></a> pandemic on the industry. <h2>Shirley Douglas – April 5</h2>
<p>The veteran actress, who was <strong><a href=/tags/0/kiefer-sutherland>Kiefer Sutherland</a></strong>'s mother and was married to <strong><a href=/tags/0/donald-sutherland>Donald Sutherland</a></strong> from 1966-1970, passed away at age 86 on April 5.
<p>Kiefer announced his mother's death late that day, saying she had passed away due to complications from pneumonia, but stressed her illness was not as a result of COVID-19.
<p>"She had been battling her health for quite some time and we, as a family, knew this day was coming," he tweeted.
<p>Shirley was born in Weyburn, Sask. in 1934. She was the daughter of Canadian health care pioneer <strong>Tommy Douglas</strong> and <strong>Irma Dempsey</strong>. Her father was also the first leader of Canada's New Democratic Party.
<p>She was interested in acting from an early age, and attended the Banff School of Fine Arts until she was 16. Her career took off in 1952, when she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, England and began performing there.
<p>Upon returning to Canada in 1957, she captured several key roles. She worked with director <strong>Stanley Kubrick</strong> on <I>Lolita</I>, portrayed <Strong>Nellie McClung</strong> in CBC's <I>Wind at My Back</I> series and also had a strong stage career, with parts in <I>The Glass Menagerie</I> and <I>The Vagina Monologues</I>, among other plays.
<p>In addition to her acting work, she was also a passionate social justice advocate. When she married Douglas, the two moved to California and she got involved in the civil rights movement and fundraised for immigrants and women. She continued her father's legacy by advocating for health care and health care reform in Canada throughout her life.
<p>She was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003 for her acting and advocacy.
<p>Unfortunately, Shirley's health declined in recent years. In 2009, she was suffering from a degenerative spine condition that left her in severe pain and needing to use a wheelchair.
