Toronto Fashion Week: 5 Questions with Pink Tartan designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran

If ever there were a reigning king and queen on the Toronto fashion scene, it would be hard to deny Joe Mimran and Kimberley Newport-Mimran the titles.

While he is the force behind international brand Club Monaco and fast-fashion giant Joe Fresh, Kimberley has been cultivating refined collections of chic and preppy womenswear since 2002. As a working mom, she puts an emphasis on impeccably manufactured staples in luxe, understated fabrics to ensure that her designs cater to everyday life.

Looks from Pink Tartan's Fall 2013 collection.

Kimberley has two dedicated Pink Tartan stores, one a lifestyle outpost in Yorkville that carries a mix of current-collection pieces and lifestyle items the Pink Tartan woman is sure to love. She has also taken on projects designing uniforms for brands like Holt Renfrew, Porter Airlines, the Windsor Arms hotel and the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood.

Surely a master at juggling a million things at once, Kimberley found time to fill us in on her latest collection, which shows at Toronto Fashion Week on Oct. 21.

We asked Kimberley the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY of her Spring 2014 Pink Tartan collection. See her answers below!

WHAT was your inspiration for the spring/summer 2014 collection?
The Spring Summer 2014 Pink Tartan was inspired by my love of contemporary art – especially Pop Art.  However, that being said, I always like to leave an element of surprise for everyone to see first-hand during my show.

WHY do you love showing in Toronto and the energy at Mastercard Fashion Week?
I love showing in Toronto during World MasterCard Fashion Week because as a Canadian designer, it is exciting to debut each collection to the country that has helped me grow as a designer and as a brand.
WHEN people see the collection what do you hope they’ll take away from it?
I hope to inspire women who want to dress in the coming season’s fashion - contemporary, on trend, yet timeless and feminine.

WHO is the “Pink Tartan” woman and what is she doing on a Saturday afternoon in Toronto?

The Pink Tartan woman is a working woman (like myself) with a busy life and loves fashion, yet appreciate simplicity when getting dressed every day.   I aim to dress that girl, who like me, really wants a fashion forward outfit, that is still work appropriate. For example, on the weekends when I am not travelling – I’m still always on the go.  You’ll find me working with my team at the Pink Tartan Boutique (77 Yorkville) or running errands to make sure my family is organized for the week ahead.

WHERE do you see yourself and your brand in five years?
In five years, I hope to see Pink Tartan being worn and available to women across the globe.
