Toronto Fashion Week: 5 Questions with Beaufille designers Chloe and Parris Gordon

We love a good sister act, and Toronto Fashion Week's Beaufille is no exception. The line is the brainchild of sisters Chloe and Parris Gordon, and while the duo may have changed their name from Chloe Comme Parris, their Spring 2014 collection is a sure sign that they haven't changed their look.

With celebrity fans like 50 Shades of Grey's Dakota Johnson, a former model with killer style, the sisters are building their brand of grungy, it-girl pieces into a frontrunner on the Canadian fashion scene. It's no wonder the Renaissance played into their Spring collection given their current state of rebranding, but Chloe and Parris don't play it that straight - they united the historical era with slick mob wives.

The result is a slinky collection of dresses, pants slit at the knees and separates held together by safety pins, perfect for the louche women that formed part of the inspiration. 

We asked Chloe and Parris the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY of their collection. See their answers below! 


WHAT was your inspiration for the spring/summer 2014 collection?
The word and idea of "renaissance" was the starting point of this collection. The idea of innovation and rebirth seemed natural to explore during the re-branding of our company. We typically contrast a historical inspiration reference, with something modern. This season we combined Renaissance with the tough, sleek, minimalist look of mobsters -- moreover, mobster's wives. A defining muse to this collection in terms of aesthetics and attitude would be Michelle Pfeiffer's character in Scarface, Elvira Hancock. We were drawn to the polished minimalism of how she dressed -- it is an aesthetic we have never taken on, so we wanted to challenge ourselves. With the Renaissance period, we were fascinated by the fine detail embedded in the clothing, architecture, and art of that time.

WHY do you love showing in Toronto and the energy at MasterCard Fashion Week?
Toronto is our home, as well as the base of our company. Without the encouragement and support from the Toronto fashion community we would not be where we are today. It's important to honor that by showing seasonally in MasterCard Fashion Week. Canadians are so proud and excited by what's going on locally, you can really feel that during fashion week.


WHEN people see the collection, what do you hope they’ll take away from it?
We hope people will see a sense of polished maturity in this collection. We hope everyone will understand our desire to tackle any type of look, and match it to our aesthetic. We hope the transition from last season's tomboy-grunge to this seasons elegant refinement will appear seamless. We love a challenge, and doing the unexpected, hopefully that will translate this season!


WHO is the Beaufille girl and what is she doing on a Saturday afternoon in Toronto?
The Beaufille woman is defined as effortlessly chic. She has an eye for artistry and imagination. She never follows trends. On a Saturday afternoon in Toronto you can find her discovering the most incredible new vintage store, or sifting through an independent magazine or vintage Vogue in the park.


WHERE do you see yourselves and your brand in five years?
We hope to see Beaufille recognized in North America and Europe, wholesaling to major department stores and minor boutiques. We hope to be showing seasonally in a fashion capital like New York or Paris. Most of all we hope to still be creating and inspiring.
