Toronto Fashion Week Diary: Day Four (Soia & Kyo, Caitlin Power and Rudsak)

As a fan of Soia & Kyo’s warm and puffy outwear, I was eagerly awaiting what the master of winter wardrobing would do for his Spring 2014 show at Toronto Fashion Week. I needn’t have worried how such a successful Canadian brand (this year marks their 10th anniversary!) could translate into warmer weather; between the light-as-air quilted puffer - thin but definitely not flat - in sky blue and grey to the greige suede trench that looked so soft I wanted to jump out of my seat to touch it, it's clear creative director Ilan Elfassy can conquer any season.

Next on the roster was Caitlin Power, best known for dressing the modern Canadian career woman. And for spring 2014, that 9-to-5er was incorporating a bit of her recent Caribbean vacation into her office gear – think hits of mustard yellow and crimson with a layer of sheen combined with show-stopping python separates (like the luxe red mini or moto-front topper).

But what really hammered home the tropical vaca motif was the mohawk braid that Redken’s Jorge Joao created backstage. I would try to explain it here but even this beauty junkie had a hard time grasping the how-to. Instead, I suggest you take this picture to your stylist next time you’re feeling a braid attack coming on.

Snakeskin also made an appearance at Rudsak in the form of short shorts and patchwork moto vests, which was the brand's secret to bringing leather into spring – leave the sleeves for fall and focus on the vests, from tuxedo-inspired ones with leather lapels to calf-length belted versions to my personal favourite, the croc embossed take in inky grey.

Backstage, Maybelline’s Grace Lee focused on the brows (the most popular request by designers this spring, she revealed) by keeping them full and brushing them up, securing them in place with Great Lash mascara in Clear.
