Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's continued efforts to build a family together were given a boost on Thursday after a judge granted the Oscar-winner's request to change her children's surnames. The ruling means her four-year-old son becomes Maddox Jolie-Pitt, while her baby daughter, who has just turned one, will be known as Zahara Jolie-Pitt.

News of the change comes hot on the heels of revelations Angelina is expecting her hunky beau's first child. Just last week representatives for the Tinseltown couple confirmed they would be welcoming another bundle of joy later this year.

The name-change process was initiated by Angelina last December when she filed legal papers. Her petition was the first formal recognition that she and Brad, who met while filming Mr And Mrs Smith, were more than just workmates.

The heart-throb actor was also referred to as "the adoptive father-to-be" in court papers, further fuelling rumours he and his glamorous girlfriend are planning to tie the knot. Brad has already made a formal request to adopt Maddox and Zahara, but legal experts say the process would be made much easier if the pair were joined in wedlock.

Angelina previously stated that any potential suitor would have to be a person of exceptional character before she would allow them to play a role in her children's lives. It would appear she has found a man capable of living up to those expectations in her Mr And Mrs Smith costarPhoto: © AFP
