11 memorable moments from past MuchMusic Video Awards

GETTING CHEEKY: A young Avril Lavigne showed off her assets by mooning the MMVA crowd in 2003, while rocking her trademark skater-punk aesthetic (low-hanging Dickies pants, flat-ironed hair and a tank top). It remains one of the brash singer’s most famous stunts to date.

A ROCKY BEGINNING: In 2002, Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock made one of their first public appearances as a couple at the Canadian awards show. The pair dated for a year until they split in 2003, rekindling their rocky romance to finally wed in 2006 – and divorce four months later.

EMERGENCY ENTRANCE: Alexisonfire kicked off the now-longstanding tradition of kooky red carpet arrivals in 2004, showing up at the MMVas red carpet in a Paramedics truck.

TANKS A LOT: In 2005, Billy Talent arrived on the red carpet atop a 1942 Sherman Tank, a primary battle tank used by the allies in WWII (it was unloaded, of course, but show-stopping nevertheless). The Canadian rock band remains the most nominated and awarded band in MMVA history, with 10 wins to their name.

YOUNG LOVE: Selena Gomez hosted the MMVAs in 2011, where her new love, Justin Bieber, made a surprise appearance. Though the young couple played coy to reporters, their chemistry was undeniable.

GAGA ON FIRE: Lady Gaga’s stage outfit – which exploded with pyrotechnics – was the talk of the MuchMusic Video Awards in 2009.

MAN OF THE PEOPLE: Kardinall Offishall represented his hometown of Toronto by chartering a TTC bus for his arrival in 2008. (We wonder if he had to pay the standard fare?)

MILEY’S EVOLUTION: Miley Cyrus shocked the crowd when she performed her hit single “Can’t Be Tamed” wearing a very skimpy outfit in 2010. Little did we know that this was just the beginning of the pop star’s transformation!

KATY SHARE-Y: To celebrate the start of summer (and her hit song “California Girls”), Katy Perry arrived in an ice cream truck in 2010, and handed out frozen treats to delighted fans.

CALL ME MAYBE: Carly Rae Jepsen’s monster hit, “Call Me Maybe,” was the song of the summer in 2012, so it made sense for the Canadian cutie to pay homage to its playful music video. Driving in a convertible thronged by hunky, shirtless men the star looked very grown up in a slinky black dress with slits up both legs.

ROCK'S KING AND QUEEN: They’ve arrived! The soon-to-be wed couple, Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger, stormed the red carpet in 2013 wearing matching black ensembles, with Avril sporting a punk rock-worthy spiked crown. The duo would go on to tie the knot one month later in a private, romantic ceremony in France.
